Been awhile since I've posted but I'm reading the posts every day.The pole mounted HW solar panels working great and now I'm wondering if installing a timer on my 40 gal. electric tank would be a wise option. Timer is around $50.oo but would it prove to be efficient or not if the tank was shut off at say 8pm.Presently the thermostats have been turned down approx. 20* from preset temp. Would it retain enough HW for the next morning shower/dishwasher etc.Right now mid-December sunny days will produce a 60 gal. tank full of reserve solar heated water in about 4 hrs. We are not using a lot of HW per day (two people) so I guess I'm asking if the shutoff time vs. the actual running time With the solar assisted heating would pay me to install the timer.

Only if you have a lot of leaks - hot water going down the drain.

A well insulated tank should only lose 1 or possibly 2° C overnight.
