All,

Since Ric Murphy was kind enough to post 'Wind & Solar Data for SouthWestern Ontario (http://www.greenpowertalk.org/showthread.php?t=7653)' I thought that I would post collected wind data for this year at my area of WV in the USA.

My site is at an elevation of 3000', ridge top property that is basically the highest point in my county. A Davis anemometer located at about 34' (8' above my roof top), and is connected to my PowerDashboard software which provides the logging.

Below are links to graphs of each month for this year, each shows a line showing the compute mean value. Take it for what it is worth!

Hi Dan,
have you been satisfied with the Davis machine for wind data? Approximately, what is the logging set up worth? I am working towards a wind generator and I would put in a weather station first to see what I have for a wind potential. We are near enough to Lake Ontario that there is good exposure to the open lake. I would like some more specific data before going too far with an investment in wind. I have read your adventures with wind turbines and they are quite informative.
Thanks

Pete,

I am using a 'bare' Davis 6410 anemometer, they can typically be gotten on eBay for about $115. This device works like a champ and they also sell replacement parts in case of damage.

This is connected to my PowerDashboard (http://www.briery.com) software for the purposes of monitoring and logging, along with all of the other RE devices that I have (solar, turbine, etc). I got tired of seeing other anemometer systems lag sometimes 30-60 seconds and averaging across that time period that I wrote the software interface. Now I can get instantaneous values up to every second, or average them across a specified time period.

So it is not standalone unit and is connected into my computer. My software uses an off the shelf DataQ DI-148U-SP A/D controller for the interface, and costs about $100.

I currently sell a 'Wind Only' version of PowerDashboard for a discounted price of $85, so the total cost is very reasonable. This software allows for connection to turbine output, and a shunt for acquiring data. It also allows connection to the Davis anemometer for wind speed and direction.

Hope this helps,
Dan
