I have changed the time that a message can be edited to 30 days. This helps with messages containing attachments that change (for example a spreadsheet that needs to get updated with new data) and such.
Please be careful in editing posts that have replies. It can seriously mess with continuity of a thread, and make reading of a thread a painful experience. For example, you post a message with claims about gadget X doing Y. Then someone else responds that you're full of it, you investigate a bit more and decide to edit your post, retracting all those claims and inserting confirmed information instead. Now a third person reads this thread, and of course the reply no longer makes any sense because of your editing.
So, when editing, please use common sense, especially if replies to your post are involved. One way would be to restrict yourself to fixing (spelling) mistakes, and if actual content is involved to clearly mark that this was edited at a later time.
