View Full Version : Flow Meter Necessary?

OK On my drain back hot water system I have a flow meter. The only use I see for it is that it also lets me know the level of water in my tank. Since we bought the house a year ago we thought the rattle was normal. Turns out the "rattle" was the metal weight in the flow meter shooting up the pipe and falling back down. So, today I took it out and we now have silent pumping water going up to the roof! Is there any reason I should spend the 75.00 on a new flow meter? I'm wondering where the rest of the bits and peices of the flow meter are since it is obviously missing the cap that keeps it from shooting up the pipe, the rod the metal piece slide up and down on and the spring that should cushion the metal weight when the water turns on. The system is about 20 years old. Thanks. MW

Greetings MW,
I know of no good reason to have a flow meter on the drainback side. A sight glass is required to know the level in the drainback holding tank for occasional refill.

Thanks Mark, that's what we thought.

Hi Colorado,
Could you please change the account picture to one that displays you (the dog can still be there too, as long as you're in the picture). It doesn't have to be pretty, just look at my picture! ;). As per forum rules we go by real first and last name, and actual pictures on this forum. The idea is that by knowing who we are talking to, and by not hiding behind a 'handle' or avatar, people will for the most part be friendlier to one another. So far this seems to be working, as this is one of the friendliest forums with the least amount of flaming that I've come across. Thank you for your understanding in this!
Best regards,
-RoB-

System update: a month after getting the system back online our gas bill dropped by 1/2. $27.00 US to heat a house at 8500ft in Colorado. Not bad. :D

A flow meter just shows the water levels. Hence it is not very much necessary.
