Under the header "RE in unusual places", here is a solar powered outhouse that I came across on Prince Edward Island. For those wanting the details, it's in the Greenwich Dunes park, very much in the middle of nowhere. Not a clue what the electricity is needed for, I was busy getting out of there before being sucked dry by mosquitoes...

I wonder what's up in the "loft" area? Was it a "flush" toilet or composting? Maybe the RE was for a small pump to drag water out of the aquifer.

Lighting? Muzak? (Handel's "Water Music" might be appropriate followed by the "Hallelujah Chorus" at the end of the performance. Otherwise "To Dream the Impossible Dream").

Is the area prone to earthquakes or volcanic activity? Might be to power a GPS to detect "movements" within.

An electric seat warmer?

Perhaps they might be installing an electric "Mozzie Zapper" to keep the premises free of pests.

Mobile phone recharger, for those who might stay in there longer than average, or want to "get away from it all" but still take it with them?

There wasn't a flat screen TV hanging on the inside of the door was there?

Or perhaps it runs an electric "botty wiper", for those poor souls who are too tired from walking through the bush to do it themselves.

I'll be interested to hear what it was for, if you ever find out.

It is a composting toilet. No electricity required.

My wife actually field-evaluated the facilities, and she categorically stated that there is no mosquito zapper. In fact, the environment can only be described as "mosquito friendly".

Actually, the panels probably power a light in there for use after dark. Didn't check this myself, as I said I was running for cover at the time. :)
