Hi there
I'm new to this stuff so please bear with me.
I'm considering installing a 10Kw grid tie system to offset current hydro costs
I understand solar can credit against all Electrical charges from Hydro One BUT how much of the delivery charges can be offset from producing your own solar power?

Oh, that's a good question Ray.
My last H1 bill was for 223kwhrs, cost for that was $23.38 (mix of peak, mid and off peak). The delivery charge was $54.04, Reg charges $1.68.

So, not being net metered, I don't know for sure, but if your production exceeded your useage there'd be no kwhrs billeld, but you's still have the minimum connection fee. I think that was about $40 IIRC. Hopefully you wouldn't be charged a delivery fee for feeding in power.

Rob will probably know the answer to your original question. Now, is there "capacity" for you to feed in? I've heard of several people who were not able to install a net meter system for that reason...not enough capacity.

Hi Ray & Ralph,

To be honest, I don't know how much is left of the various charges that cannot be offset with net-metering. Hydro-One (if that's your provider) has a little table (https://www.hydroone.com/business-services/generators/net-metering) that names them, but doesn't put numbers with it. From what I remember fees actually vary depending of your location, whether it is "rural" or "urban".

To make matters worse, the net-metering bills I looked into several years ago (when net-metering just started) had kWh-production via solar converted into dollars before it was applied to a bill to either offset it or 'bank' as credit. The conversion was done at a for Hydro-One beneficial rate (under their tiered metering system), putting the net-metering producer at a further disadvantage.

Maybe, hopefully, they now just subtract kWh-for-kWh? I've not seen any recent net-metering bills. It was and probably is (maybe purposely) made sufficiently opaque that unless you have a few bills and can compare and work through them there's no real way to say what you will get for you energy production.
