Can solar panels be recycled, or reused after their life span

Yes, absolutely. Solar panels can be recycled and reused after their typical 25-to-30-year useful lifespan. This is a critical aspect of ensuring solar energy remains a fully sustainable solution and is a growing focus for developers like us at Fourth Partner Energy.

The industry is rapidly establishing the necessary infrastructure to handle the growing volume of decommissioned panels. Before recycling, many panels are suitable for a second life, which is even more environmentally and economically beneficial as it avoids the energy needed for full recycling.

The real problem is finding a recycling place near you...
The "solar boom" started here in 2010, but there's still nowhere to take broken or old panels in our area (Ottawa - Ontario - Canada). They go in the landfill.

While in theory PV modules are full of high-grade and possibly re-usable materials, separating them is problematic. Everything is 'glued' together by two sheets of EVA (type of soft transparent plastic) that melts when the panels are put together in a vacuum oven. Since here in North America we rely on "market forces" to come up with solutions, I don't think there's been a business yet that was able to make a profit recycling panels. I've heard of a few that started, being subsidized by government, but as soon as the subsidies stop so does the company. It is problematic.

I'm fortunate that I've got a recycling facility within 5 km of my home. But it's still a problem which needs to be solved! Same-same for EV batteries. Again, I'm fortunate that I've been able to recycle one set of batteries from an old e-scooter and attach them (via a BMS) to my rooftop solar batteries, and a second set has its own bunch of 12 volt panels with an MMPT controller. Since the start of November I've been able to switch off the grid and am importing about 1-1.5 kWh per day. Don't know if it'll be viable in winter but that's a few months away yet.
