I was thinking to installed solar-panel in my House and save some money on Energy bills. Is it solar-panel costly?

Hi Alton,

The first thing I'd probably do is some sort of "energy audit" and see where your losses of heat are eg leaky doors and windows, do you have double glazing, ceiling insulation. What sort of hot water system are you running? (Maybe consider a heat pump installation?) When you know how much energy you are losing you can then have a better idea of how much solar panels you will need to run your house, and when you will need to generate it. eg winter for heating, summer for air conditioning. (My own house is set up now so that the heating bill is virtually zero.)

I designed my own system so that, even though it's generating about 200% of my consumption in summer (except on the really hot days, when I run the air-con for hours - as now - forecast 37 degrees C today, 39 tomorrow!), in winter it just barely meets all my requirements. Having more panels would really be a waste of money since I couldn't make up the difference in either power saving over winter (I have solar hot water system with a gas booster which only runs 3-4 months of the year) or selling my excess power in summer.

Consult your power bills over 12 months and see where your power deficits might occur.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Hi,
In my opinion, it is a good idea to install solar panels at home. The cost of solar panels depends on the size and quality of the system you will choose.
Thanks!!

The rising cost of electricity from traditional sources, paired with the declining cost of solar panels and systems over the last several years. But the true cost of solar panels, and whether they’ll help you save money, depends on a few key factors. Solar panels generate their own power and can therefore greatly, if not entirely, offset your monthly electricity bill. Solar panels aren’t cheap: with installation, an average residential 5kW size system runs between $3 and $5 per watt.

You have taken the right decision. Installing solar has brought down my electricity bills since the past year or so. The cost of a solar panel depends on the material, type and the number of panels required.
