I am in the process of designing a hybrid building, residential/ manufacturing that would include wood fired boiler for heating a large hydronic storage tank, hydronic heating , solar panels 300w x 40 and all the associated equipment 48 volt battery bank
the building will have a south facing 100ft long for the solar array
geothermal loop in large pond for summer cooling
all lighting in building will be LED
Power needed includes 240 volt for running compressor an plasma/welding only used intermittently less than 2 hours per day

its the associated equipment that's causing me the greatest concern if there was no $$$
concerns what would be the ultimate additional equipment for an off grid setup system
be rectifiers, management systems, ups for computer etc, monitoring, standby generator

even adding a wind turbine for backup ( north American/ Canadian approved )

picking top of the line components for all of the above remember this is pie in the sky at this point

thanks Bill

Hi Bill,

Your project sounds a bit like my own business building (9,000 sq ft office and warehouse). I did not contemplate taking it off-grid, as the operating expenses for something that size off-grid are just a bit too much for my taste (the ongoing cost of batteries is what makes it expensive). It is designed for 100kW of solar PV on the roof though, and if we get that installed we'll produce about twice as much energy as we use (ie. it's not just carbon-neutral, net-zero, but actually net-positive).

Have a look at http://www.greenpowertalk.org/showthread.php?t=18748
I've described the whole process in great detail.

Heating is geothermal and hydronic. High insulating values. Passive solar for a good chunk of our heat. No A/C. Strawbale walls. In short, I tried hard to make this a "greener" industrial building, and from an economical perspective it makes sense too in that it's cheap to run. Our heating costs are a fraction of those of a regular industrial building this size.

Regarding the solar panels on the roof: We've run into problems with Hydro-One, our local distribution company. Hopefully we'll be able to resolve that and get them installed in the coming year.

Hi Rob

I read through your posts regarding your office warehouse with great interest

As I say my pie in the sky is just a pile of papers at the moment it seems I am changing
my plans daily, looking at the building frame I am thinking of using the open latticed
produced by worldwide steel building columns and roof beams as an example, setting the south side roof at an angle to best suit placement of the solar panels set for somewhere between the summer and winter settings ( my home location is N52.16 113.48w el 855 meters) this will of course change with the final location of the property when is found.

I have been looking at SIPS, CIFS, and FPSF similar to the legalett geo-slab to fill in the open spaces so its till in the formative stages,I have spend many hours going through green power talk sections covering all areas and there is certainly a great wealth of information to absorb.

currently into the windpower section page 9

so things will be constantly changing as I progress but it nice is to
dream what could be the final design will keep you updated as things progress

bill

now back to the wind section

Look at what else Rob does in his spare time! How'd he get past the robot/bonehead checker?

Ralph

Rob removed offending post prior to this one. Thanks.

What do you mean Ralph? :amazed:
I don't see anything... ;)

Actually I'm having a little vacation (at home). Business is closed this week, so I'm spending some time on my pet-projects. Just upgraded my computer to Windows 10 (not sure yet if I like it, but it's the only thing that will work properly with my new 4K monitor).

Upgraded my big UnRaid file server to new hardware and the latest version of that OS. Neat stuff!!

At work we've been busy installing security cameras. So we now have an actual security system (it records when motion is detected).

The things I do for fun!
