Just got back from lending a hand to Wilco, at Dommelvalley Green Power (http://www.dommelvalley.ca/). We installed a Skystream (http://www.skystreamenergy.com/skystream/) turbine on a 10 meter (33 ft) monopole. This is a 1.8 kW downwind turbine, so there's no tail, and it has an inverter for grid-tie build into the nacelle of the windmill itself. The Skystream is a brand-new design from Southwest Wind Power, and this particular install is one of the first few in Canada.

This genny was placed in a nature reserve called the Wye Marsh (http://www.wyemarsh.com/), near Midland Ontario, on top of a little hill. This is truly a beautiful place. Because of the average wind speed there it won't be producing a whole lot of electricity, it's main purpose is to inform people about renewable energy and show them up-close how it's done. In addition to the Skystream there is also going to be a Bergey XL1 on a 100' tower doing battery charging, and a few solar panels.

It was fun helping out there! Below is a picture of the Skystream (and Wilco, he's holding up the tower so it doesn't tip over ;)). Maybe when the project is complete Wilco can tell us a bit more about it (and post a few more pictures).

Good job guys . Nice to see a turbine that is larger than the 1Kw and smaller than the 3 kw to hit the market. Integrated grid tie is a plus as well, that opens up a whole new market. for grid tie applications. I would love to see the data off one of these in good wind. Paul:)

And here is another installation of the Skystream with some shots: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06LA7mh7WdE

Neat! Great video!
That sure beats all those vacation videos people force me to sit through...

So, do you get a lot of people stopping by because they see the turbine in your front yard?

Wilco: Now that the skystream has been operational for awhile ( aprrox. 1 year), Has the unit lived up to its expectations as far as performance and reliability..???

Hi Paul,

Both Skystreams are performing well. There are still a couple of glitches regarding the remote meter, but this does not have an impact on th reliability and performance of the turbine. There is a new software release but have not tried it yet. I have only actual production numbers on the skystream here at 10m hub height. It produces an average of 100kWh/month for the last 8 months and I expect that it drops to about 80kWh/month due to lower production in the summer months. The average wind speed here is 2.66 m/s at 10m hub height. We are putting the third one up early next month.
