Andrew Hill started a petition online that is asking the Ontario government to release the true cost of running the nuclear power plants. You can sign it online here (http://www.change.org/en-CA/petitions/ontario-provincial-government-release-the-true-complete-unsubsidized-costs-of-nuclear-power-generation).

Everything I've been reading suggests that nuclear power plants are enormous money pits, with not a single one in the world being able to stand on its own, without massive government subsidies. Rather than reflected in the price of electricity, we pay for nuclear power through our taxes, and that is if everything works as advertised, without a Fukushima/Chernobyl/Three-Mile-Island type disaster. Not reflected in its price is the future cost of safely getting rid of the nuclear waste that is produced either (if 'safely' is possible in the long run).

The effect of artificially low electricity prices is that it obscures alternatives, such as renewable energy, by making those look expensive. It would IMHO be in everyone's best interest if we knew how much we are paying for those nuclear power plants. Hopefully the result will foster an honest discussion of the future of electrical power.

Please take a look at the petition, and sign it if you agree!

To further the message above: Here is an article by GE (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/5f849de4-dbf8-11e1-86f8-00144feab49a.html#axzz22UEFCRyp), a manufacturer of nuclear power plants, admitting nuclear power is not cheap.
