This is probably a stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway.

Does it hurt anything to have disconnected solar panels out in the direct sun light?

Just curious.

No. Doesn't do anything.
Just be mindful that strings of panels can have very high voltage on the terminals even in very low light conditions (a full moon will do it if there's no load on the panels).

No problem leaving the panel disconnected or shorted out in the sun. Only time you will see full current out of a panel is when shorted out or connected to a battery that is discharged. With a decent controller you will see very little if any power when the battery is fully charged up.
